Doggone Pet mat

Crochet magazines have some good inspiration. Most of the patterns are beyond my abilities (I am a comfortable beginner), but I love looking anyway. This dog mat caught my eye and I thought my Pepper needed to have one for his very own. You can find it in the Fall 2018 issue of Fast, Easy, Fun Crochet magazine.

The colours based on what I had in my stash. I used the Loops and Threads Impeccable Claret, Heather, and Chocolate. It is a strong sturdy general acrylic yarn that should hold up well to the wear and tear. Only time will tell. I’m sure I’ll need to wash it often as he’s a messy eater. He would rather eat off the floor than in his bowl. Sigh.IMG_0253

I tried following the directions to keep the yarn attached but it was getting hopelessly tangled so I cut the ball off after each row to stop that from happening. Then every few rows I wove in the ends. I think I might have pulled too tight in the center part as it seems to be wider on the bottom of the mat. Blocking will help with that.

The outside trim was straight forward although I used more than the 33 sc along the sides. Looking at it closer it seems to make skew the proportions a bit, but I like the full look.IMG_0258

For blocking I wet it down and squeezed out as much water as I could and lay it out on a towel to dry overnight. This is where it would come in handy to have strong hands, and a blocking mat. Blocking mats may be my next big investment. I have a desire to try some old-fashioned lace doilies/table cloths/runners, etc. I’ll tell you more about that another day.

All in all I am pleased with the outcome. Sad to say, Pepper does not seem to notice anything new. Dogs.
